You can hardly find art any sweeter than Will Cotton’s (which btw I presume is his artistic name, it would be way too much of a coincidence to have such a suiting last name).
Cotton started working in the 90s, creating landscapes of candy, pastries and ice cream and eventually started incorporating pinups and other female characters in his paintings.
If his work seems familiar to you and you can’t quite pinpoint why, it may be, because he art directed Kate Perry’s video for “California Gurls”, and also created some artwork for her albums. I must confess I don’t quite like the video, I feel the resulting video ended up being too plastic and fake looking, loosing most of the delicacy of his work (but then again I’m a tad of a music snob, so maybe I’m bias).
Working with him must be a real treat, seeing that he creates elaborate maquettes of these settings from real baked goods as a visual source for the final works. Imagine all those yummy leftovers which must not go to waste! The sin of gluttony in perfect form!
