Don’t ever be fooled into thinking the coolest doll around is Barbie. She may be a trés chic gal et all, but she isn’t the only cool cat in town (doll wise speaking). While she fills the icy blond shoes, the role of alt quirkier chic belongs to Blythe (I myself, am a complete sucker for Blythe). So much so, that even the late Alexander McQueen chose her to be the model of his collection for American store Target. Blythe’s swagger continues to inspire people the world over, and one such person is artist Emma Mount.
Born with a pencil in her hand, Emma is fascinated by exotic strong women and ghost stories, a result of her growing up during an era filled with such icons as Debbie Harry, Kate Bush and Bowie and influential pop culture characters such as Hammer Horror, the Addams Family and the Munsters.
She’s bored with the concept of body image and the ideas of beauty fed to us by the media (amen sister!), so she tries to paint subjects who are a little provocative, challenging, cheeky or unconventional.
