It always annoys me when people refer to grafitti as the defacing of property. Done properly, grafitti is in itself, a form of art, a means of sharing an artistic vision, just like any other form of art. Unfortunately, for every talented grafitter, five other senseless vandals entertain themselves by writing trash and swear words in walls, thus giving the art of grafitti a bad name!
Retna’s work is clearly in the first category. His work merges photography with graffiti style and paint, time with color, couture with street culture, the spiritual with the sensual, and fluidity with grit.
He became notorious for his ornate painting technique, he uses paintbrushes mixed with the traditional spray can, and many of his pieces synthesize the line between fine art and graffiti.
